Can You Overcome a Bad Temper?

If you have been convicted of a violent crime in North Carolina, part of your sentencing may include a requirement to complete some type of anger management program. If you have had a bad temper for a significant length of time, it may seem unrealistic that you could change the way you respond to conflict. However, with adequate support and your determination to develop new coping mechanisms, you may be able to alter the way you react as you continue to prepare for life after your conviction.

Anger management courses can sometimes get a bad rap or seem completely useless. Interestingly, they are actually highly effective, especially if you are committed to implementing the practices you are learning throughout the course. If you have been ordered to undergo an anger management course, you will benefit from participating in the lessons and putting what you have learned to use in your own life.

According to the Mayo Clinic, some tactics you can consider in your efforts to better manage your temper include the following:

  • Step away from the conflict and consider if there are solutions to the issue.
  • Learn the value of humor and the ability to laugh in helping diffuse difficult situations.
  • When you are feeling upset, take a moment to gather your thoughts before you react.
  • Incorporate exercise into your routine and take proper care of yourself.
  • Understand the importance of asking for help when you recognize that you are not in control of your emotions.
